ER nurse reunited a missing, non-verbal patient with his family after days apart

When a developmentally delayed, non-verbal patient arrived at Wilmington Hospital's Emergency Department unable to identify himself, Ross Eckbold, BSN, RN, refused to leave the matter unresolved. He spent his shift conducting detective work—tracking down a phone number and contacting local authorities—and discovered the man had been missing for several days. When the family arrived, the patient broke into a giant smile as tears and hugs filled the room. Colleague Meghan Byrne, who nominated Ross for the DAISY Award, said: "Without Ross and the other nurses that day, this patient might still be in the Emergency Department lost, confused, and missing from his family." ChristianaCare honored Eckbold with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses in March 2025.
