Three off-duty nurses performed CPR and saved a driver who suffered a cardiac event

While off-duty near SGMC Health Main in Valdosta, Georgia, nurses Mary Margaret Smith, Ruby Craft, and Angie Efird came upon a driver who had suffered a cardiac event and crashed her vehicle. Without hesitation, the three women immediately administered CPR and coordinated emergency services, stabilizing the patient until paramedics arrived. The patient's husband later said simply: "They performed CPR on my wife and saved her life." SGMC Health honored the trio with the October 2025 Health System Hero Award, recognizing their swift, expert actions as a testament to the nursing profession's dedication far beyond the hospital walls.
