Iowa mail carrier saved 85-year-old woman trapped in a burning home on her route
On September 30, 2024, Meagan Murray of New Hampton, Iowa was delivering mail when she noticed smoke pouring from a residence. She called 911 and, hearing a faint reply when she knocked, forced open a door and helped an 85-year-old woman escape to safety, remaining at her side until emergency responders arrived. The home was a total loss. Murray received the Iowa Governor's Lifesaving Award at a ceremony hosted by Governor Kim Reynolds in December 2025, and was also named the National Association of Letter Carriers' National Humanitarian of the Year — the first Iowan to earn that honor.
