George Hubbard of Franklin County, Virginia, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was at the helm of a Higgins boat ferrying troops to and from Utah Beach on June 6, 1944. More than eight decades later, on June 2, 2026, Hubbard was honored at a ceremony in Roanoke, Virginia, with the Freedom 250: Hometown Heroes Award — an honor celebrating America's 250th birthday by recognizing individuals who displayed bravery and heroism in defense of the nation. Now residing at a nursing home in Salem, Virginia, Hubbard was recognized alongside fellow D-Day veteran James Flinchum in a public tribute from Roanoke Police Chief Scott Booth.
