Ann Barber

Salisbury, NC

36-year Army veteran mentors fellow vets and hauls firewood for those in need

Ann Barber served 36 years in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves before retiring as a lieutenant after 29 years as a Virginia state trooper. Now living in Salisbury, North Carolina, she gives back every day: she mentors participants at the Salisbury-Rowan County Veterans Court, serves as a Scoutmaster, and delivers firewood to homeless veterans and school supplies to western North Carolina communities in need. In November 2025, WCNC Charlotte and Hyundai surprised her with the Hometown Hero award — including a new Hyundai Santa Fe — recognizing a lifetime of quiet, steady service. Her message to the community: "Accept the invitation to help someone else."
