Enumclaw substitute teacher honored with Citizen Lifesaving Award for CPR that saved a student
In October 2022, Beth Madill — a long-term substitute teacher at Enumclaw Middle School in Enumclaw, Washington — responded immediately when a 12-year-old student collapsed from sudden cardiac arrest before class. Madill performed CPR while school nurse Lissa Strecker arrived with an AED and delivered a life-saving shock; together with teacher Della Demerjian, they sustained the student until she could be airlifted to Seattle Children's Hospital. The student survived, underwent heart surgery, and returned to school. On March 20, 2023, Enumclaw Fire Chief Randy Fehr formally presented Madill and Strecker with Citizen Lifesaving Awards during an Enumclaw School District board meeting, honoring their calm and decisive action.
