Mathews County kindergarten teacher honored for sending 11,000 care packages worldwide
Amy Ashberry teaches kindergarten at Mathews Elementary School in Mathews County, Virginia, and since 2020 has personally organized the sending of 11,000 care packages to children in 100 countries through Operation Christmas Child, filling shoeboxes with toys, hygiene items, and school supplies. Her commitment to children far beyond her own classroom earned her the WTKR News 3 2025 Everyday Hero Humanitarian Award, voted on by the local community, along with a $2,500 prize and a $1,000 donation to her chosen charity. Ashberry said she was grateful the recognition helped "spread the word about Operation Christmas Child" to more families.
