Sacramento medics rush into a downed helicopter to save a trapped survivor

On October 6, 2025, Paramedic John Doughty and EMT Edward Slivinskiy of Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District's Medic 6105 responded to a medical helicopter that had crashed across all lanes of Highway 50 on the 59th Street Bridge. Navigating against oncoming traffic, they reached the wreckage and found a critically injured patient trapped beneath the aircraft. One helicopter crew member had been killed and two others hospitalized in the crash. Working in extraordinarily dangerous conditions, Doughty and Slivinskiy extracted and treated the surviving patient. The Sacramento Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution presented them with Heroism Medals at a ceremony at Station 105 on May 20, 2026.
