Shot in the chest protecting his partner, this Dallas K9 earned the Medal of Valor

K9 Figor, a Belgian Malinois serving with the Dallas Police Department alongside Senior Corporal Scott Jay, proved his courage during a 2023 manhunt in Pleasant Grove. When a suspect opened fire, Figor was shot in the chest yet continued working to apprehend the gunman, allowing his handler — who had also been shot — to survive the encounter. Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia said the dog's actions were "nothing short of heroic" and that Figor "helped save his partner's life." In April 2026, Figor was honored at a retirement ceremony where he received the Dallas Police Department's Medal of Valor and the State of Texas's Star of Texas award from Governor Greg Abbott — becoming the most decorated K9 in department history.
