Mr. Walter Okafor
Atlanta, GA
The neighbor who turned an empty lot into a garden for all
When the corner lot in his Atlanta neighborhood sat trash-strewn for years, Mr. Okafor did not file a complaint. He brought a shovel. Then he brought tomatoes, then trellises, then a hand-painted sign that read "Take what you need." Within two seasons the garden fed dozens of families, taught the block's children where food comes from, and gave the elders a shaded bench to gather. Walter never asked for credit. He just unlocked the gate every morning at dawn and pulled weeds until neighbors who had never spoken became friends over rows of greens.
